Tuppence Is A Good Start!
£1,000 Raised On First Event To Save The Curzon Cinema Roof
On Thursday 11th April the Curzon held an event to launch a campaign to raise £100,000 over the summer, to rebuild their roof. Under the title of the ‘Curzon Roof Festival’ the first in a series of fundraising events took place to help raise a target of £100,000 in order to rebuild the roof. It is of vital importance is the restoration of the roof, with fragile tiles that are nearly 100 years old currently letting water in to parts of the building. Along with the scaffolding and other external work to the building, the total bill is looking to be around £500,000 for complete repair.
On Thursday, the final screening of Fishermen’s Friends, which has been a great success for the Curzon, was graced with an appearance by star of the film, Tuppence Middleton, and Clevedon’s very own Barnacle Buoys. A full house was entertained by a glorious set of shanties followed by the screening. The stage was then taken by Tuppence Middleton, who was interviewed and professional film director, by Curzon trustee Niall Johnson.
Tuppence, who grew up in Clevedon, and has recently agreed to become a Patron of the Curzon, described her acting career and memories of earlier days in Clevedon, specifically remembering chewing mint Poppets at the Curzon. At which point, one of the Curzon Volunteers was able to present her with a box of Mint Poppets, still sold at the Curzon!
The evening raised in total over £1,000, with the largest donation being £300.00.
Curzon CEO, Susannah Shaw said, ‘we know we have a loyal audience out there, but with very little notice we were amazed at the generosity and good feeling that was generated by the event and want to extend a huge Thank You to the community for showing their support for the Curzon – and we also would like to thank local girl, Tuppence for such a terrific launch to what we hope will be an action-packed summer!’
Every penny you donate and have donated already to the Curzon will be going towards the restoration of the cinema.
