Emily – Tan Lux Studios
Tell us about your business. What services do you provide?
Tan Luxe Studios is Clevedon’s first dedicated sunbed shop and a modern beauty hub, home to a collective of highly skilled, self-employed hairdressers, beauticians and aestheticians. Our vision was to create a true one stop destination, giving the local community access to a wide range of premium beauty services all under one roof, eliminating the need to travel to multiple locations.
Our services include professional sunbed sessions, hair styling, hairdressing and hair extensions, occasion makeup and semi-permanent makeup, aesthetics treatments, lymphatic drainage and teeth whitening. We also offer a full range of nail services including gel and acrylic nails, as well as lash extensions, lash lifts and tints, and expert brow treatments.
At Tan Luxe Studios, we pride ourselves on providing a high-quality, convenient and welcoming experience, bringing together trusted beauty professionals to deliver exceptional results in one central location.
How did you start your business? What’s the story?
I entered the beauty industry just over three years ago while juggling a full-time role as a Business Analyst alongside studying for my accounting exams.
When I left school in 2015 and considered college, there was a strong stigma attached to studying beauty. So instead, I pursued a career in accounting. This turned out to be one of the best decisions I could have made as it gave me an invaluable understanding of how businesses operate financially.
That said, pushing down my creative side was never easy. That’s when I started my side hustle, offering nails, lashes, brows and occasion makeup.
I slowly built a loyal clientele, which eventually grew to the point where my evenings and weekends were fully booked. Then, I fell pregnant, and when my daughter arrived, I made the to step away from my accounting career. My heart had always belonged to beauty, and after years of ignoring it, I finally leaned fully into my creativity and made the leap into full-time self-employment.
Becoming a mother meant every decision I made was now centred around providing long-term stability for my daughter. I faced a choice: work even longer hours or increase my prices, neither of which felt right. Instead, an idea I’d been sitting on for a long time finally came to the forefront and refused to be ignored. When Alaia was just three months old, I sat in Teatro with my laptop and a coffee, my baby sleeping peacefully in her pram beside me, and began writing the business plan for Tan Luxe Studios.
This is only the beginning. Tan Luxe Studios has been open for just over a month, and we have so many exciting ideas planned for Clevedon; many of which have never been done here before.
What is the best thing about running a business in Clevedon?
The best thing about working in Clevedon is undoubtedly the people. From the moment I opened the doors, I’ve felt an overwhelming sense of support from the local community. Everyone is incredibly friendly, welcoming and genuinely invested in supporting local businesses, which makes such a difference as a small business owner.
Clevedon has a real community feel; it’s the kind of place where people take the time to chat, recommend you to friends, and celebrate your successes as if they’re their own. The encouragement, kind words and loyalty I’ve received so far have been unwavering, and it’s made building Tan Luxe Studios here even more special. I feel truly proud to be part of such a supportive, close-knit town and couldn’t imagine a better place to grow my business.
