Pauline – Sow and Arrow
Tell us about your business. What services do you provide?
We are a local, independent, family run health food shop located on Old Street, Clevedon. We specialise in low carb, low sugar foods and high-quality supplements. We have an instore bakery, producing entirely gluten free, fresh, daily bakes, including quiche, Scotch eggs, sponge cakes, shortbreads and brownies. As a Functional Nutritionist and author, my passion is to stock ethical, fair trade and high-quality products and supplements.
How did you start your business? What’s the story?
Sow & Arrow opened back in 2018. My husband and I wanted to create a health-focused store specialising in low-carb and high-quality supplements driven by my own personal health challenges and professional insights. Approximately 13 years ago, while working as a physiotherapist, I experienced significant health issues, including fatigue, anaemia, and hormonal issues. It was at this time that I retrained in the field of functional nutrition, which led to substantial improvements in my own health. This transformative experience fuelled my passion for empowering others through knowledge and simple dietary and lifestyle changes.
What is the best thing about running a business in Clevedon?
Clevedon has a really wonderful sense of community, with many wonderful independent businesses dotted along both upper Clevedon and the town centre. We have found that locals recognise the need to shop local and support local which has lead to our team at Sow & Arrow building relationships with our customers, many of whom drop in three or four times a week for a chat and a coffee!
As a local business owner living in Clevedon, we have been able to stock Sow & Arrow with products that local residents may find difficult to get anywhere else in the area. We like to source small producers and showcase their products, where they may otherwise find it difficult to get stocked in larger retail outlets.
As a local resident myself, I enjoy contributing in any way Sow & Arrow can, to the town’s economic growth. Supporting local suppliers, creating jobs and providing somewhere that local residents can drop in and find supplements and products that have been specifically selected for their effectiveness and high quality.
Lastly, I have to shine a light on just how beautiful Clevedon is. I moved to Clevedon in 2004 and have not looked back. With all of the charm of a Victorian seaside town as well as the friendliness of the residents and wide range of wonderful businesses, Clevedon has my heart!
