Story behind the Business – Books on the Hill

Welcome to our blog series, telling you the stories behind the businesses in Clevedon.

Alistair – Books on the Hill

Tell us about your business. What services do you provide?

We are an independent book shop and we have books for all ages and interests. We also have a good dyslexic range and we publish dyslexic  friendly books for adults – we are actually the first publisher in the UK to do it.

How did you start your business? What’s the story?

I finished my PHD in History and Archaeology and I couldn’t find a job. I love books so I worked with my family, and we set up the business 10 years ago. This is our second premises, we had a smaller shop on Hill Road, and we moved to this one in January 2024. We now also have a tea room.

What is the best thing about running a business in Clevedon?

There are a number of things, it’s hard to pinpoint just one. The first thing I would say is it’s my home turf, I grew up here so I know lots of people, and it’s lovely to see people you know coming into the shop. The second thing I love about having a bookshop here is helping people to read, so those who have difficulty reading or are scared of reading come into our shop and feel safe, and perhaps are able to leave the shop loving books and being able to read a little bit better.

Books on the Hill is on Hill Road and is open from 9.30am – 5.30pm Monday – Saturday.
