A steel replica of a car built in Clevedon by Richard Stephens in 1898 has won the Arts category in the Galvanizers Association’s nationwide annual awards scheme, beating off the challenge of projects throughout the UK and Ireland.
The faithfully-detailed replica, now gracing the town’s Six Ways roundabout, was built in Lincoln by Ryan Atkin and American film-maker Mark Reber, now a Clevedon resident, and funded by members of his monthly Cars & Coffee rally.
The award in the shape of a stylised galavanised watering can was presented to Mark at a gala lunch in London on Wednesday (August 20).
Mark said yesterday: “The response to the monument in Clevedon has been overwhelming, but to see it beat such excellent rivals from across the UK and the Republic of Ireland was very gratifying.
“I’m so pleased to bring the trophy back to Clevedon, and back to all our supporters and generous donors. It’s a tremendous victory for the town.”
