Clevedon’s new parking charges threaten to hurt the town’s vibrant small-business scene.
Discover Clevedon have sent a letter to the interim CEO of NSC raising a formal concern with an error made on the live TRO for parking charges. The letter is attached below. Please continue to submit your appeal to the TRO while we wait to hear the outcome of our letter.
North Somerset Council voted in October 2024 to axe free parking in Clevedon, Portishead, and Nailsea. This decision will see parking meters along Hill Road, as well as charges for the currently free carparks near Queen’s Square.
Discover Clevedon has consistently opposed the introduction of parking charges as being detrimental to local businesses. We believe it will undermine independent local businesses across the area and encourage shoppers to get in their cars and drive to large shopping areas with free parking, such as Cribbs Causeway. It is particularly unfair to local independent traders in Hill Road and Alexandra Road, who have been singled out as the only on street shopping area to have charges imposed.
The latest consultation has omitted the free 30 minute period, which was an action from the initial consultation. This omission seems to be an error, which calls into question the entire process.
The TRO is now live, and the deadline for comments is July 16th.
We urge anyone who uses the area to support the local businesses, and to object to the latest consultation.
