About Us

Welcome to the Discover Clevedon website!

This website is dedicated to promoting the fabulous range of businesses, cultural landmarks, events and activities on offer in the stunning seaside town of Clevedon.

This website is funded and maintained by the Clevedon Business Improvement District organisation (BID), now known as Discover Clevedon.

For those unfamiliar, a BID is a not-for-profit initiative funded by local businesses. Its aim is to deliver projects and services that enhance a town and its economy. BIDs demonstrate the power of businesses working together to achieve shared goals.  BIDs have grown significantly in popularity across the UK since their introduction in 2004. There are now over 341 active BIDs across the country.

Here in Clevedon, the BID was established in 2018 through a ballot for a five-year term. At the end of that term, a second ballot was held, with 62% voting in favour, meaning we are now in our second term, running from 2023 to 2028.

How is it run

The BID is managed by two BID Managers, Kate Cowdy and Laura Durrant who are paid to work for one day a week each. Strategic direction is provided by a dedicated Board of Directors. Each represents a local businesses or community group and undertakes the role in a voluntary capacity.

It is really important for our Board to represent all business types and areas of Clevedon, and we are always looking for more Board members to join. If you are interested please contact Kate on [email protected].

What We Fund

Each year, we collect around £90,000 in levy payments from businesses with a rateable value of over £5,000 within the geographic boundary of the business improvement district.

The levy is 2% of rateable value, meaning the average business pays just £4-5 per week—around £200-300 per year. The financial year runs from 1 August – 31 July each year, and businesses can expect to receive an invoice at the beginning of each term.

In terms of where we invest the money, we are guided by our three focus areas.

1

Marketing & Promotion to; Encourage more people to discover Clevedon, more often

2

Public Realm & Environmental Improvements to make Clevedon more attractive for businesses, residents, and visitors.

3

Engagement, Influence & Investment; to build business community, improvement and perceived value of the BID. To be a respected voice of Clevedon and influence public agency
